Is a fingerprint door lock reliable in cold weather?

My neighbor Gary was super pumped about his new fingerprint door lock last fall. Looked high-tech and cool. But then January rolled in, and we hit around -15°F. Total disaster! The lock just died, and I had to use the backup key like it was the '90s. Makes you wonder if these gadgets are really meant for cold places. First of all, cold weather is a nightmare for batteries. We all know regular AAs lose power in the cold, but these locks usually take lithium or alkaline batteries. When it’s below freezing, they don’t last long at all. The voltage drops, and you could lose about 30% of the battery life pretty easily. The lock could be dead by the time spring comes. Companies say these locks can handle the weather, but seriously, try that in a Minnesota winter. Then there's the fingerprint scanner. The capacitive ones? If your fingers are dry or chapped from the cold, good luck getting it to work. The optical ones are even worse—any frost or condensation just fogs them up. I read about a guy in Canada who said his success rate dropped to 60% when it got to -15°C. He had to literally breathe on the sensor to make it work. Talk about ridiculous! Also, cold makes metal shrink. If the lock’s made from cheap metal and isn’t insulated well, it could jam or warp. My cousin Dave lives in Vermont and bought one of these locks online, but by December it started making a horrible grinding noise. The gears inside froze up, and he got so frustrated he just ripped it off the door and went back to keys. And then there's condensation. When warm air from inside hits the cold metal lock outside, it creates water. If that water gets inside the lock, it can freeze around the deadbolt. I saw on the news that a family in Michigan got locked out overnight because their lock froze solid. The fire department had to come and chip it free. Talk about embarrassing! There might be a solution if you’re willing to spend more money. The high-end brands, like Yale or Schlage, sometimes have heated scanners or thermal coatings. But you’re looking at around $300 to $400. Plus, you have to install them right and make sure everything is insulated properly. Most people don’t bother with that and end up surprised when it stops working. So to wrap it up: Can a fingerprint door lock work in the cold? Yeah, if you spend a lot on a good one, keep changing the batteries, and install it carefully with insulation. But honestly, if you live in a really cold place, just stick to a regular key. Way easier. Or get a big dog that loves the cold—like a Husky. Mine loves to sleep in the snow, and that’s the best doorbell ever!
